VICTORIA, Texas – With the U.S. Golf Association’s new grooves rule taking affect on the PGA Tour and in some USGA events in 2010, several major equipment companies are introducing wedges with what they call innovative sole designs in order to offset the potential decrease in spin. And Terry Koehler, President of EIDOLON Golf wants to set the record straight, as the company has received many inquires from consumers, the trade and golf professionals on how other companies’ sole designs might compare to the patented EIDOLON Golf V-SOLE technology).
“Very simply,” says Koehler, who owns the patent on EIDOLON’s sole design, “EIDOLON’s V-SOLE patent protects the use of two positive bounce angles in the sole of a golf club. It’s that unique combination of two effective bounce angles which provides a measure of scoring versatility no other wedges even come close to matching. No other type of wedge sole can go so easily from hardpan to bunkers, fairway to rough.”
At least two major companies known for their wedges nave recently introduced models with a very aggressive bounce in a small portion of the sole, but then the rear portion of the sole is swept away in an extreme negative angle so that it really doesn’t offer any true bounce effect at all. One company even refers to it as their “V-grind”, which Koehler says could cause confusion in the marketplace with EIDOLON’s V-SOLE.
Koehler makes clear that “V-SOLE” is a registered trademark to EIDOLON and that the wedges from each company mentioned present the golfer with “effective bounce” of 10-12 degrees or more and cannot compare at all to the versatile playability of the EIDOLON patented V-SOLE.
“While I don’t think a major company would set out to intentionally mislead the public, I was surprised to see that reference to ‘V-Grind’, when we have a registered trademark on “V-SOLE”, Koehler said. “What surprised me even more is that these two major wedge companies are offering essentially duplicate sole designs . . . again . . . and this basic design was introduced and abandoned by another major golf company over 20 years ago.”
Koehler went on to explain that “bounce” refers to the configuration of the golf=2 0club’s sole. With the club soled, and the shaft not angled either forward or backward, the bounce angle defines the geometry between the plane of the turf and the downward angle from the leading edge of the club to the trailing edge of the sole; the actual amount of bounce in degrees, combined with the width of the sole, is what helps the club perform through the sand and turf.
“EIDOLON’s patented V-SOLE has been proven by thousands of golfers of all skill levels, from all over the world, to be the most versatile sole design ever for a wedge,” says Koehler, who writes a popular blog as thewedgeguy.com. “It allows all of EIDOLON’s wedges – pitching, gap, sand and lob – to be used from any kind of lie, from the tightest hard pan to rough to bunkers – all with excellent playability.
“The unique versatility of the V-SOLE also allows EIDOLON to custom alter the lofts of our wedges by a degree or two in either direction to give the golfer the exact lofts he or she need to best fit their game and distances.”
