MIAMI, Fl (September 14, 2009) – When it comes to breaking down a golf swing and analyzing what’s really happening, very few golf instructors can match the research of Jim McLean. In fact, much of McLean’s research has helped revolutionize the way the game is taught today.
McLean brought us the X-Factor in 1992, (at the time it was the No. 1 best-selling issue in the history of GOLF Magazine) and many other golf instructors have used his findings to help advance their careers, and to help improve the golf swings of thousands of golfers. McLean has since followed with such findings as the Y-Factor, the PowerLine, and his new book, “The Slot Swing” is due to hit book stores later this month. And now McLean brings us the V-Gap, in the October issue of Golf Digest. And that’s not all, in his interview, “What I Learned From Turnberry” also in the October issue of Golf Digest, Tom Watson inadvertently validated Jim’s theory on “Swing Left to Swing Right”
First, though, Jim McLean’s latest breakthrough in golf research, the V-Gap. Along with Lead Master Instructor Michael Hunt, Jim McLean conducted extensive research on the backswing and downswing to see what the best golfers in the world are doing. What they discovered is the fact that, when the left arm is parallel to the ground in both the backswing and downswing, the wider the gap in shaft angle, the farther the ball goes – you get more distance! To prove this revolutionary breakthrough, McLean, the leader in golf research, analyzes the swings of Bubba Watson (check out Jim’s analysis of Bubba Watson’s swing on the September 22 episode of Swing Analysis on www.thegolfersnation.com), Sergio Garcia (check out www.thegolfersnation.com for a previous episode of Swing Analysis where Jim analyzed the swing of a younger Sergio Garcia), and Fred Funk. Plus, McLean offers tips and drills for you to use to help widen your V-Gap.
The second article, an interview with one of the greatest golfers ever – Tom Watson, a five-time British Open Champion – Watson said, while practicing for the Heritage Classic in 1994 he discovered a new key for his swing, “Swing to the left through impact.” Watson said he discovered this key while watching Corey Pavin’s practice swing. Ironically, Jim McLean first wrote about this in 1989, in an article titled, “Swing Left to Swing Right”, and in McLean’s updated, third version of his Eight-Step Swing book (now available in bookstores nationwide), McLean explores this concept in great detail. Here’s what Watson said: “My Swing might look the same as it always has, but it really isn’t. I don’t have the extension I once had. The width of my arc is not what it used to be. My left arm bends a little bit now. I leaned how to swing the club for real in 1994. I had some success before then, but in 1994 that’s when I found the key. Like Sam Snead said, we all have our keys. If one key stops working, you go to the next key. I found the key at 3:15 during practice on a Tuesday afternoon at the Heritage Classic,1994, Hilton Head, South Carolina. That’s when I found the secret. My attack into the ball. I didn’t win that week, but I knew I had found it. I was tired of hitting the ball with toe-deep divots out to the right. I decided to swing like Corey Pavin’s practice swing. Swing to the left through impact. As soon as I did that, I hit the ball perfect. Divots were square, and I had a different feeling with my right shoulder. It wasn’t as low coming into the ball. It all had to do with shoulder plane, keeping it the same on the downswing as it was on the backswing. I had always practiced my backswing. Then, out of frustration, I found something that worked.”
