Four golfers from Florida and one from Arizona will represent the United States in the World Golfers Championship after winning their respective flights in the rain-shortened national qualifying at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL.
The 15th World Golfers Championship is scheduled Oct. 24-30 in Marbella,Spain where the Americans will be joined by teams from 32 other countries.
Kevin Simpson from the President Country Club in West Palm Beach, FL, playing off a 6 handicap, claimed the first flight with a gross 80 for a net 74 on the Las Colinas Course, finishing two strokes ahead of Mike Graves, who was playing his home course.
In the second flight, Parker Smith of Sun City, AZ edged James McAfee of Wylie, TX by two strokes after posting an 80 for a net 72.
Mike Vandiver of Port Richey, FL cruised to a win in the third flight, posting an 80 for a 66 and finished seven strokes ahead of his nearest rival, John Kurczek of Sun City.
Tony Ott of West Palm Beach, who qualified at Plantation Palm Golf Club in Land-O-Lakes, Fl, and Frank McInerney of the host club captured the fourth and fifth flights with 90-20–70 and 93-27-66 scores, respectively.
The second round of the qualifying on the El Campeon Course was washed out before competitors could finish nine holes.
Winning the team competition, counting the best four scores, was Plantation Palm with a 72-hole total of 288, eight strokes ahead of Mission Inn.
