Nike Golf athlete Tiger Woods charged to the top of the Fed Ex Cup standings after winning the third Fed Ex Playoff event at the BMW Championship and capturing his sixth PGA Tour victory of the season. It was a vintage Woods performance having won by an 8-stroke margin after posting four rounds in the 60’s, including an awe-inspiring third round score of 62.
What has been described as the “perfect storm,” Woods’ third round consisted of nearly perfect iron play with his Nike Blades, evidenced by a tournament tie for fourth ranking in greens in regulation. Woods went after the pins to put himself in positions to make birdies and eagles – a lot of them. For the tournament, Woods ranked tied for first and second in eagles and birdies, with two and 19, respectively.
An example of Woods “going after it” was during the third round on the par 5 ninth hole, where he hit his Nike SQ 3-wood 300 yards on the green in two to within 10 feet for an eagle. On the same hole in the final round, Woods was behind a tree, was able to hook his ball around it and made birdie – dazzling the crowds again.
Woods averaged 306 yards off the tee using the combination of his Nike SQ DYMO driver and Nike ONE ball. He averaged 73% in driving accuracy.
“I’ve been extremely consistent all year, Top 10’d just about every week I played and obviously had six wins,” said Woods. “To come off a knee surgery and to have this type of year, and as I said, to be this consistent is something that I’m very proud of.”
Woods’ victory brings to 10 the number of wins by Nike Golf athletes on the PGA Tour in 2009. Other Nike athletes making it into the top 30 of the Fed Cup Standings are U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover and The OPEN Championship winner, Stewart Cink.
