Alexandria, VA – September 15, 2009 – CMAA is proud to announce the release of the 2009 Compensation & Benefits Report. The study, conducted biennially, is the only one in the industry that examines compensation trends for key staff members at clubs. More than 850 CMAA members from throughout the country participated in the survey.
“This report gives every club a good look into where the industry is today, and it shows me where my club stands as an employer in the club industry,” comments Michael Leemhuis, CCM, CCE, President of CMAA and General Manager/CEO of Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, MD.
Overall, base compensation continued to rise from 2007. Also, the percentage of members receiving an allocation for professional development and the percentage of members receiving reimbursement for out-of-office expenses remained unchanged.
In addition to the compensation and benefit findings, the report also details how the club industry is handling the recession. Many clubs are pro-actively taking actions to mitigate the effect of the recession by reducing operational costs and finding creative ways to increase revenues. The data indicates that most clubs have been impacted by the current economic environment with half experiencing declines in membership in 2008 and 61 percent reducing the number of employees in the past year. It is interesting to note that 37 percent of clubs indicated that they have not experienced any declines over the past four years. The coming year should illustrate improvement for the industry as a whole with fewer clubs forecasting staff reductions.
“It is apparent that the club industry has weathered the economic storm remarkably well – adapting and changing to fit the current leisure and hospitality marketplace. CMAA has said all along that the club industry would make it out of this recession in good shape,” says CMAA CEO Jim Singerling, CCM, CEC. “I am happy to see that this study supports that belief.”
