Property’s Extensive Renovation Project Nears Completion
Scottsdale, Ariz. (September 25, 2009) – Troon Golf,® the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing is pleased to announce it has been selected to manage the renowned Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort located on Kauai’s north shore.
Designed by golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1971, the course is finishing a multi-million dollar renovation, scheduled to be completed in early 2010. The improvements are being implemented in conjunction with the renovation of The Princeville Hotel, which will reopen as The St. Regis Princeville Resort in October 2009.
“We are excited to partner with The St. Regis Princeville Resort and to expand our portfolio into one of the world’s most desirable destinations,” stated Hud Hinton, president and COO, Troon Golf. “We are also confident that the improvements being made at the property will create a more memorable experience for visitors, especially when combined with Troon Golf’s unparalleled service and playing conditions.”
The Makai Course has long been considered one of Hawaii’s premier championship layouts. It has appeared on several Top 100 lists and is ranked by Golf Digest as one of Hawaii’s best courses. The Makai’s distinct layout strategically winds its way around serene lakes and native woodlands, while capitalizing on spectacular coastline views.
The renovation is being led by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and features several enhancements that include reconfiguring the strategy of greens complexes. Improvements include bold reshaping of the bunkers; refurbishment of selected cart paths and comfort stations; and upgrading the practice facility to include two large practice tees, a practice fairway bunker, eight target greens with bunkers, a teaching tee, and short-game practice complex. Plans for a new clubhouse will be implemented in the next phase of the renovation project.
Alex Nakajima has been appointed the new general manager of the improved Makai Course. Nakajima originally joined Troon Golf in 2000 to open the company’s Japan office in Tokyo. He also gained valuable experience working with an investment institution as director of golf asset management overseeing 150 golf courses and developing Accordia Golf, the largest golf course management company in Japan.
