September 24, 2009 – Tokyo, Japan
Yonex Tour Professional and teenage phenom Ryo Ishikawa prepares for the upcoming 2009 Presidents Cup at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, California October 6th – 11th 2009.
Playing his second full season on the Japan Golf Tour, Ishikawa has become the premier player on the JGTO, winning 3-times this year (5 career victories) and currently sitting atop the Japan Tour’s money ranking. As of September 21st, Ryo was ranked 51st in the Official World Golf Rankings.
2009 has been the most exciting year in Ryo’s young career. He played in a total of three Majors, becoming the youngest player since 1952 to play at the Masters. He was paired with world No. 1, Tiger Woods for rounds one and two of the British Open and made history at this year’s PGA Championship as the youngest player ever to play in the event and the youngest ever to make the cut.
In early September, Presidents Cup International Team Captain, Greg Norman selected Ishikawa (along with Adam Scott) as one of his two Captain’s Pick for the International Team.
When asked why he decided to use one of his Captain’s Picks on Ishikawa, Norman cited Ryo’s maturity and focus.
“At the International Team meeting at the British Open, he was phenomenal. He was engaged, he walked around the entire room, introduced himself to everybody, made sure everybody understood that he wanted to be on the team,” Norman said.
“He played well that week. He played with Tiger (Woods). He stood up to Tiger. So that tells me that he can deal with a pressure situation.”
Norman has also observed how well Ryo deals with the horde of Japanese media that follow him wherever he goes.
“He travels with an entourage of about 50 media people, so he’s used to that type of atmosphere, that buzz going on all the time, and it doesn’t bother him. I think that is a true reflection of his inner personality, as well,” Norman said. “I like to give young people the opportunity. Obviously, he has the credentials, but he has to be given the opportunity at the same time.”
