The Final Installment of the Gene Sarazen Episode of Classic Conversations
MIAMI, FL (October 20, 2009) – Gene Sarazen, the first golfer to win each of golf’s four modern majors: The Masters, The U.S. Open, The British Open, and The PGA Championship; was a true treasure. Sarazen, who passed at the age of 97 in 1999, also played on six Ryder Cup Teams, was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974, and was the first recipient of the PGA TOUR’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In this final installment of his interview, recorded in 1989, to be released exclusively on http://www.thegolfersnation.com, Sarazen addresses a variety of topics.
The Squire discusses the fact that it was his ambition to become the first golfer to win the Grand Slam. He also touches upon the importance of the mental game, discusses his relationship with Tommy Armour, and how he and the great Walter Hagen wanted to bring golf supremacy to America.
There was very little Sarazen didn’t accomplish in his career. He won the 1935 Masters, won three PGA Championships, two U.S. Open Championships, and one British Open Championship. Overall, he won 39 times on the PGA TOUR. Sarazen also hit “The Shot heard ’round the world”. In the final round of the ’35 Masters, he recorded an albatross 2 on the par-5 15th hole when his four wood from 235-yards found the bottom of the cup. At the time he was trailing the leader, Craig Wood, by three-shots. After having made up all three shots on one swing, Sarazen went on to defeat Wood in a playoff.
