Grassing of entire course completed
McHenry, MD- Wisp Resort Development Inc. and OB Sports Golf Management recently announced that the construction of the new Lodestone Golf Club in western Maryland is on schedule for a June 2010 opening. Located on an expansive mountain ridge above Deep Creek Lake and the well known Wisp Resort, all 18 holes of Lodestone Golf Club are completely grassed. Boasting a stunning layout co-designed by three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin and Todd Schoeder of Denver-based Design Workshop, the club will offer a wide range of mountain and lakeside amenities that capitalize on all four seasons.
“All holes on the front nine were actually playable this season and the back nine grassing was completed this year,” stated Steve Richards, president of Wisp Resort Development, Inc. “We look forward to opening Lodestone next summer to the golfing world.”
The par-72 Lodestone will play 7,335 yards from the championship tees and feature bentgrass greens, tees and fairways to deliver the very best of championship playing conditions for the most demanding golfer. With numerous elevation changes throughout the course, including a 110-foot drop from tee to green on 13th hole, Lodestone will boast jaw dropping views of the mountainous region that sits above Deep Creek Lake.
Lodestone will be a truly natural mountain golf course highlighted by bold, tree-lined fairways, eye-catching bunker complexes and dramatic rock outcroppings. Native fescue grasses frame many of the course’s scenic holes enhancing its natural feel. Not only will Lodestone have the highest elevation of any course in Maryland at 2,973 feet above sea level, but this premier club marks the first Maryland course that Hale Irwin Design has been involved in and the first course co-designed by Irwin and Todd Schoeder.
“It’s been a pleasure working with both Todd Schoeder of Design Workshop and the legendary Hale Irwin on what will most likely be one of the most talked about course openings in the summer of 2010,” said Orrin Vincent, owner and co-founder of OB Sports Golf Management, the company overseeing construction management and golf course operations at Lodestone Golf Club. “From the onset of the project, our agronomy team, led by superintendent Scott McMillion, both course designers and the leaders of Wisp Resort Development team have been truly dedicated to building a world class golf club. It is exciting to reach this milestone and we look forward to start planning the opening of what will certainly be a celebrated course opening.”
