(Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) – Legendary golfer Gary Player and his design company, Gary Player Design, have a long and successful history of designing championship golf courses in Asia, dating back to their first course opening in the early 1970’s in Japan. To date, over 40 projects in Asia bear the Gary Player brand, with several others underway.
Many of Player’s courses have received accolades including Ria Bintan in Indonesia, which has been ranked the top course in Indonesia since 1994 and was named the number one course in all of Asia last year by Asian Golf Monthly. Also making headlines in recent years are Suzhou Jinji Lake International Golf Club in Jiangsu, China (Best New Course in China by China Golf Magazine 2006 and #2 Best New Course in Asia, Asian Golf Monthly 2006); The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau in Hong Kong (Best Environmental & Socially Responsible Golf Club by Asia Pacific Golf Summit 2008 and Best Course in Hong Kong by Asian Golf Monthly 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006); and Kranji Sanctuary in Singapore (Top 10 in Singapore, Asian Golf Monthly 2005).
Always at the forefront of environmental sensitivity, Player’s Kranji Sanctuary was the first course in Singapore and the second in South East Asia to receive the prestigious Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Award, and Ria Bintan was the first in Indonesia.
Gary Player himself was named the Best Golf Architect for 2004, and Runner-up for 2005 by Asian Golf Monthly.
Player is especially enthusiastic about next year’s opening of his next course in Asia, Hidden Tiger Golf Club, located in Anhui Province, China. The layout takes full advantage of the scenic Tai Ping Lake with Yellow Mountain as the backdrop.
With enthusiasm for the game of golf spreading across Asia, Gary Player and Gary Player Design see tremendous opportunity on the horizon for their team in the giant continent, and coupled with the inclusion of the sport in the 2016 Olympics, they expect a very bright future for world-class golf development in Asia. Player recently remarked ‘I have been traveling to Asia and enjoying its fascinating culture and hospitality since the 1950’s. The exponential growth that has taken place in recent years is remarkable and the passion for the great game of golf in Asia is just amazing and exciting. I look forward to spending a lot of time here in the future as we continue to build great golf courses for people to enjoy.’
