After 72 holes on four different golf courses in Marbella, Spain, the team title in the 15th annual World Golfers Championship came down to the wire before being decided by just one stroke.
Indonesia, the 2007 champion which holds a number of elimination events to determine its five players, emerged as the winner again with a total of 1,187-based on the best four scores daily. Members of the team were C. Suharsono (0-5), Wawan Setiawan (6-10), Putat Wiboma (11-15), Dian Moriya (16-20) and Isna Wibowc (21-25).
Finishing second at 1,188 was the team from Portugal composed of Louis Farrelly, Jose Paredes, Oscar Garcia, Marcos Takata and Victor Pereira de Silva.
The United States team finished 22nd at 1,284. Parker Smith of Sun City, AZ finished seventh in the second flight at 307 while Michael Vandiver of Port Richey, FL finished ninth in the third flight at 311. Other members of the team were Michael Graves, Tony Ott and Frank McInerney.
Claiming gold medals in the individual flights were Martin Rudecky, David Jakus, Garcia, Atiwat Yiamrueng and Dr. Bohacs Zsolt.
In the World Golfers Invitational held concurrently, Boyko Veronika and Movchan Olena of
Roksolana won the two-person team title while Dermoth O’Neill, Sriravongse Choksamarn, Sumit Rathor, Uriy Kiselov, Olena Movchan and Janusz Wisniewski claimed the individual titles.
The WGC USA/Panorama Travel team of Anders Bengtson and James McAfee placed 24th in the team race while Bengtson was 9th and McAfee 10th in their respective flights.
Hosting the competition were the Marbella Club Golf Resort, the Rio Real Golf Club, the Santa Clara Golf Club and the Flamingos Golf Club.
