(ROATAN, Honduras) – Pristine Bay Resort, one of the western Caribbean’s most-anticipated resort communities, today announces its Black Pearl golf course will have nine holes open by the first of the year, and the full 18 open for play by residents, real estate prospects and visitors by early Spring 2010.
Pristine Bay and The Black Pearl are located on the idyllic tropical island of Roatan, long a favorite of scuba divers and an increasingly popular destination on Caribbean cruise itineraries. Grassed with the revolutionary Paspalum turf, the back nine of the par-72, 7,179-yard layout is enjoying an excellent growing season and on schedule to offer immaculate playing conditions during the height of tourist season.
“After many months of hard work by the Dye Designs team, The Black Pearl is rapidly maturing and coming to fruition,” Mario Toriello, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Pristine Bay Resort. “We anticipate all 18 holes will be open by Easter. The Black Pearl will feature 14 holes with Caribbean views and serve as the island’s extraordinary introduction to world-class golf.”
Like the golf course, construction of Pristine Bay’s residential component is also continuing at a brisk clip. Bay view and golf course condominiums, two-, three-, and four-bedroom villa units and one-quarter-acre custom home lots, many with unobstructed ocean views, are all available. Villas start at $600,000 and range up to $1 million; lots run from $230,000 to $700,000; and condominiums from $348,000 to $700,000.
Golf aficionados will be thoroughly impressed by Pete and Perry Dye’s handiwork. The Black Pearl’s signature hole is the 157-yard (145 yards from the Blue tees), island-green, par-3 11th. From the tee, players enjoy an exceptional view of the golf course and Caribbean. The green sits in the middle of a lake and is ringed by a narrow bunker to give slightly awry shots a chance of remaining dry. Given the elevated tee and ever-present trade wins, proper club selection will be key to avoiding a big number on the scorecard.
Players who drop a shot at the 11th will have an opportunity to make amends at the 540-yard (499 yards from the Blue tees), par-5 13th hole, but only if they play prudently. A wide fairway begs for a powerful drive; the real challenge lies in the second and third shots. Longer hitters will have a chance to reach the green in two, but must avoid missing left as the hole is peppered with more than 20 small bunkers beginning about 100 yards from the green. A lay-up is no bargain either, as a stream crosses the tapered landing area.
The 417-yard (397 yards from the Blue tees), par-4 15th is another hole that will have golfers reaching for their cameras. Playing against an ocean backdrop, a downhill drive must thread fairway bunkers and avoid a stream far left. The largest fairway bunker then narrows, runs down the left side of the fairway and coils around the green, acting as a buffer between a lake and the putting surface.
“The Black Pearl complements Pristine Bay’s luxury resort and real estate options; it will attract golf travelers from around the world and those interested in purchasing a second or vacation home on an island paradise that presents tremendous value,” says Toriello. “We can’t wait to open it for play.”

About Pristine Bay Resort
Located on the lush, tropical island of Roatan, 35 miles off the coast of Honduras, Pristine Bay Resort is situated on a 400+ acre site adjacent to the Caribbean Sea. The azure waters off the coast of the island, enhanced by the world’s second largest barrier reef, provide a stunning backdrop and one of the truly unique settings for golf in Central America.
The Black Pearl, Dye’s first project in Honduras and Roatan’s first golf course, is an 18-hole, par-72 resort layout measuring 7,179 yards from the back tees. The course starts at the ocean’s doorstep, rises into the island’s rolling foothills, then takes golfers on a wild ride back to the seaside clubhouse. It will feature one of Dye’s signature island greens, and 14 holes will offer stunning vistas of the ocean and the Meso-American Barrier Reef.
A state-of-the-art practice facility, including short game area and multiple putting and chipping greens is being developed in concert with the golf course to host a variety of instructional programs. The goal being to create an atmosphere of game-improvement, one that encourages guests and residents to enhance their skill sets while honing their games on one of the region’s most playable layouts.
Dye Designs, pioneers of the use of Paspalum turf for tropics-based projects, is grassing The Black Pearl with this salt-water tolerant strand known for its environmental compatibility, ease of irrigation and maintenance, and translucent green hue. Its appearance – juxtaposed against the turquoise waters offshore – inspired The Black Pearl’s tagline: “The Best Greens and the Best Blues.”
