The Southern Ohio PGA honored Ed Mitchell, founder of Mitchell Golf, Dayton, Ohio, with the Horton Smith Award for 2009 at its October 25th awards ceremony. The Horton Smith award is given annually for contributions made to continuing education for fellow PGA members.

“I am very honored to receive this award from my fellow peers,” states Ed Mitchell. “I started my golf career in Michigan where Horton Smith was a golf professional. I’m very aware of what he meant to our association and the contributions he made to educational programs for his fellow professionals. I’m proud to be a recipient of an award honoring his name.”

Ed Mitchell is a 42-year member of The PGA with the last 26 as a member of the SOPGA Section. He got his start as an assistant professional at The Country Club of Jackson, Michigan in 1962. He served as Head Professional at Clio C. C. & Shenandoah Golf & C. C. in Michigan, and as Director of Golf at Sabal Palms G. C. and Bonaventure Country Club in Florida.

During his career, Ed has served the PGA at both the section and national levels on rules & club relations committees, as Section and Chapter officer and as instructor at PGA business schools & The PGA Junior Golf Academy. He currently serves on The PGA of America Education Committee. Ed has had two successful careers in the golf profession, first as a club professional for 20 years and as an equipment manufacturer and educator for the past 22 years.

Ed Mitchell has been offering training schools in club repair and performance fitting through Mitchell Golf Equipment Institute since 1999. During the last 11 years several thousand students from around the world have been certified as graduates. Specific seminars on how to incorporate club performance into lesson programs and how to set up and operate a club repair shop have been conducted for SOPGA professionals as well at the PGA Merchandise Show and the PGA Fall Expo.

“Golf is both a great game and a rewarding business,” Ed says. “My staff of PGA professionals and I take great pride in offering training programs for golf professionals who ultimately will continue golf’s great traditions and make the game and business better for those who follow.”
