Harry Cooper winner of 31 PGA TOUR events and first-ever LA Open on Classic Conversations
MIAMI, FL (November 17, 2009) – Harry Cooper is considered by many to be the greatest golfer to ever play the game and NOT win a major championship. Nicknamed “Lighthorse” … Cooper won 31 times on the PGA TOUR, and in 1926 won the first-ever L.A. Open. Prior to his passing in the year 2000, Cooper gave an interview from his home in Hartsdale, New York, and tonight on http://thegolfersnation.com the first of this two-part series debuts on Classic Conversations.
Born in Leatherhead, England, Cooper was the son of golf professional who actually worked under Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews. Cooper’s father moved the family to the U.S. in the early 1900s and first took a job as a head professional at a golf club in Dallas.
Cooper, who ultimately was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992, had 20 top-10 finishes in Major Tournaments. The closest he came to winning was the 1927 U.S. Open where he lost an 18-hole playoff to Tommy Armour. In the 1936 U.S. Open at Baltusrol Golf Club, Cooper lost by two strokes to Tony Manero in what was a very controversial tournament. Manero had been accused of cheating, but nothing was ever proven.
Cooper’s best year was 1937 when he captured eight (8) titles, lead the TOUR in earnings, and was the first recipient of the Vardon Trophy.
After retiring from the TOUR, Cooper moved on to teaching the game and settled in Westchester County, New York. There he served as head professional at Metropolis Country Club, and later he worked as a teaching professional at Westchester Country Club.
On Classic Conversations Cooper discusses how he learned the game, his keys to the golf swing, and his days on the TOUR. To see Part I of Classic Conversations with Harry Cooper, log on to http://thegolfersnation.com tonight.
