November 24, 2009; Phoenix, Arizona: A flawless round from tee-to-green carried PING pro Lee Westwood to a course-record-setting 64 and the title at the Dubai World Championship. The 36-year-old European Tour star hit every fairway and every green in regulation at the season-ending event that also clinched the inaugural Race to Dubai for Westwood.
Westwood, who received his first set of PING clubs as a 13-year-old, played 14 PING clubs en route to a six-shot victory on the Earth Course, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. In a tournament that saw him miss only six greens and eight fairways, Westwood relied on a G10 driver, i15 3-wood, Rapture V2 5-wood, i10 irons (3-9, PW), two Tour-W wedges and a Redwood Anser putter. He also had 27 one-putt greens and was 13-under-par on the par 4s.
“I was very confident in what I was doing and I expected to play well,” said Westwood, who entered the final round with a two-shot lead. “It’s got to be the best day of my golfing career. I think that’s about as good as I’ve ever played under this pressure.”
When the final putt dropped, Westwood’s name was atop the leaderboard with a 23-under-par total and he was European No. 1 for the second time in his career. He also moved to the No. 4 position in the world-equaling his highest-ever ranking.
The 31st worldwide win of his career, all with PING clubs, capped his best season to date. It marked his second win of the year and his 11th top ten finish. He now ranks second in most European Tour wins with 20.
