Industry Hills, California (December 2, 2009) – Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort has been named “2010 Golf Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA). NGCOA is the leading authority on the business of golf course ownership and management. Official recognition is scheduled for February 11, 2010 during the Association’s Annual Conference in San Diego.
The NGCOA’s award resulted from a golf course owner member vote honoring four distinct criteria:
• Exceptional Quality of the Course
• Exceptional Quality of the Ownership, Management & Service
• Outstanding Contributions to its Community
• Significant Contribution to the Game
Previous highly acclaimed winners include the famed Pebble Beach in Pebble Beach, California in 2006. Additionally, the Firestone Country Club in Akron Ohio was named for the “Golf Course Excellence” award in 2010.
Industry Hills Golf Club recently completed a 22 million dollar comprehensive renovation of its two courses, the Dwight D. Eisenhower (The Ike) and the Babe Zaharias (The Babe) including a 100% replacement of all of the fairways, bunkers and irrigation on both golf courses. Impeccable course conditions and exceptional service explain not only Industry Hills’ 1,400 members and 90,000 plus annual rounds, but also the fact that it is home to most of Los Angeles’ sports and entertainment events and television shoots because its conditions rival the most exclusive private country clubs. World Class on-site golf facilities include a short game area, 4 practice putting greens, a 64-stall lighted driving range, completely renovated pro shop, palm tree lined cart storage area, lakeside after golf dining, spa, golf related hotel amenities and men’s and women’s locker rooms. The course is in impeccable condition and the weather ideal year-round for golf. The two championship golf courses at Industry Hills Golf Club have reopened to stunning reviews.
“The two main reasons for truly appreciating a golf course are the quality of the layout and the consistency of the maintenance. The renovation guarantees that golf enthusiasts will enjoy the courses at Industry Hills Golf Club for years to come,” says Dave Youpa, PGA Director of Golf at Industry Hills Golf Club. “These are large, mature golf courses with huge trees, lush wide fairways and unique bunker styling. People love the layout; it challenges golfers of all levels without being unfair. Of course our maintenance has to be top-notch at all times, and we are constantly working hard to keep it that way.”
As Tiger Woods’ self-proclaimed “proving ground,” these courses have always been considered two of Southern California’s finest. The renovation to the two courses offer golfers a number of dramatic yet visually subtle improvements to playability. The fairways have been completely replaced with Bermuda Tiffway II turf, used on major PGA Tour courses, to ensure a highly consistent playing surface. The irrigation has been completely replaced to ensure even coverage throughout the course and the bunkers have been renovated to allow for drainage and fair lies. In addition, the landscaping throughout the complex has been completely upgraded to give the golfer the feel of the finest manicured courses.
Home to more than 20 US Open qualifiers is Industry Hills Golf Club’s signature track, the legendary, 7,200 yard, par-72 Dwight D. Eisenhower (The Ike). This jewel was completely renovated in 2006 and now features a pristine layout designed to challenge the serious golfer, and yet, with multiple tee locations, reward those with all skill levels looking for a truly exceptional golfing experience. While maintaining the challenges of the original William Bell design, the course with Casey O’Callaghan’s renovation, now features a more fair landscape. As with both courses, The Ike has reconstructed its bunkers and many of its greens complexes, and carpeted its wide fairways with a thick layer of lush Bermuda grass. A state-of-the-art Toro irrigation system has been installed to ensure these refurbishments stay strong and healthy well into the future. Host to many regional and national tournaments and events, The Ike stands as one of the nation’s supreme challenges.
As a perfect complement to the renowned ‘Ike’, the 6,826 yard, par-71 Babe Zaharias (The Babe) golf course offers 18 holes of championship golf that require superior shot-making skills throughout. Recently completed to coincide with the ESPYs Celebrity Charity Golf Classic held at Industry Hills Golf Club, the Babe features reshaped bunkers filled with new, crushed marble sand, enlarged tee boxes, graded and widened fairways, remodeled facilities and Pacific Palms signature views of the San Gabriel Mountains. Both courses are prime for play at Los Angeles’ only true destination golf resort and offer a challenging and exciting golf experience for any handicap.
Another interesting yet often overlooked feature of the Industry Hills Golf Club is its focus on “Green Technologies”. One hundred percent of the irrigation of the complex is accomplished with reclaimed water. Special collection systems under certain fairways and the driving range collect methane gas from the long ago closed land fill that is used by the resort to run generators and boilers for heating and air conditioning. The owners even went as far to hire a goat herder to clear hillsides instead of utilizing polluting machinery typically used for such work.
