MESQUITE, NV – (December 17, 2009) – Bobby Wilson’s legendary driving skill didn’t disappoint during the recent RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship. Wearing Cherry Bomb LoudMouth Golf pants, Wilson ignited golfing fireworks by taking home a historic double title: Senior (ages 45+) and Super Senior (ages 53+).
Wilson, 53, a member of the Long Drivers of America (LDA) Hall of Fame, wrote a new chapter in long drive history by driving 378 yards to win the Senior Division, and 362 yards to take the Super Senior Division. His two wins earned him $70,000.
True to form, Wilson was gracious about his record-setting performance. “I went out there a week early to try and qualify for the Senior and Super Senior Divisions,” he said. “I trained for them and I won them. I think it was one of those things where everything came together and I got blessed. It was fun to do it.”
Wilson’s family accompanied him to the event, including his 22-year-old twin daughters. He wore LoudMouth Golf pants throughout the Championship Week, including at his Hall of Fame induction, when he paired a black sports coat with the Cherry Bomb pants.
“I wore LoudMouth Golf pants everywhere,” Wilson said. “They are stylish, they help me stand out in a crowd, and I always said that the LoudMouth pants just help me keep my legacy going.” Wilson’s favorite LoudMouth patterns, in addition to the Cherry Bomb, include A-Tisket-A-Tasket, and the Shagadelic.
Wilson said that qualifying to get into the final four of the Super Seniors was tough. “It was 56 degrees and the wind was in our face,” he said. “So the yardages were not very long at all. When you are hitting into the wind, everybody has a chance at it. Even the hitters who aren’t as long have a tendency to hit it lower and into the wind. So it gave everyone a great chance to compete.”
“That was on Sunday and then on Monday, it was the Seniors and I was on my game and won every round to get into the final 8. It changed all week. It was one of those things where you have to adjust with your clubs and mental thinking to be prepared for the next day.”
Wilson used an Adams 9032 LV driver with a loft of 6 ½ degrees. He used a House of Forged ULTRA shaft, with a length of 48 inches, which is conforming to the USGA.
“I’m gonna tell you this,” Wilson added, “Use a zero friction grip. Now you have everything!”
Wilson, a resident of North Little Rock, Arkansas, began golfing at the age of 10. He has been a champion top-ranked long driver for a quarter of a century.
His performance at the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship earned accolades throughout the golf world, including praise from Art Sellinger, LDA owner and CEO. “The RE/MAX of Texas Shootout is Bobby’s 11th LDA title, by far the most of any long drive competitor,” said Sellinger. “Every time he tees it up, Bobby’s the player to beat.”
