Adidas Golf introduces an entirely new low-profile outsole platform called advanced THiNTech to improve stability and overall footwork
Carlsbad, Calif. (January 13, 2010) – adidas Golf has introduced a footwear breakthrough that promises vast improvements in stability, balance and footwork to build a more consistent golf swing. Understanding the biomechanics of the sport and working with tour and teaching professionals, the adidas Golf footwear team has defied convention by developing an entirely new low-profile system called advanced THiNTech.
“Advanced THiNTech is more than just a new footwear technology,” says Dave Ortley, Sr. Director of Global Footwear for adidas Golf. “In fact, it’s a better way to build golf shoes, focused on reducing platform thickness to improve overall product performance. We are confident that every key performance attribute of a golf shoe can be improved by bringing the golfer’s foot closer to the ground. The THiNTech concept was first employed by adidas Golf in the beginning of 2007 and continued to evolve through the 2009 season. It became apparent to the team that the limiting factor prohibiting them from achieving the optimum sole thickness was the industry-standard attachment mechanism. In order to get the golfer’s foot and center of gravity lower, they decided to re-engineer the whole system and collaborated with Pride Sports, the industry leader in golf cleat technology and makers of SoftSpikes. The end result was a new system called PINS (Performance INsert System), which is 32% lower than conventional cleat systems, and a new outlook on how golf shoes can now take performance to another level.
PGA Tour professional Sergio Garcia has been playing adidas Golf footwear his entire career and was one of the first to test shoes featuring advanced THiNTech with PINS. “There is no doubt that I feel closer to the ground… it almost feels like you’re wearing nothing,” said Sergio. “The lower and more stable the shoe is, the easier it is for me to be able to swing a little harder.”
Dr. Ian Wright, a renowned Sports Biomechanist, took part in a recent study on the benefits of incorporating a thinner sole in golf footwear. “We did some mechanical testing where we quantified the lateral stability in a range of golf shoes from a number of different manufacturers,” said Dr. Wright. “adidas Golf shoes with advanced THiNTech consistently tested as being more stable.”
