The “Gene Sarazen Spirit Award” for Notable People who Started as Caddies:
• Comedian Tom Dreesen: http://www.tomdreesen.com/ Golf’s Global Caddie Ambassador “I started caddying for six years before I went into the service,” said Dreesen, a member of the celebrity field at AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am for more than a decade. “The members there all Jewish and the caddies were all gentiles. The members were businessmen and businesswomen and they treated us like men, not like servants. But when he was 11, Dreesen began his now more than 50-year relationship with golf when he became a caddie at Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood, Ill. His life changed forever.

In 1946 he broke ground and built Clearview Golf Course In Ohio. Dr. Powell passed away December 31st, 2009. The angels are smiling to have him on the team. The world will be a better place because Mr. Powell shared his life and heart to the kids and the game. PGA Life Member

• John M. Shippen, Jr., http://www.aaregistry.com/detail.php?id=1313 One of the first two (2) African-American golfer’s to play in the US Open in 1896, and the first American to lead the US Open, as well as the first African American. In 2009, the PGA of America granted posthumous membership. Originally from Washington, D.C., John Shippen was one of nine children born to a minister and his wife. Shippen’s father moved the family to Southampton, N.Y., in 1889, where he was sent to serve as a preacher on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. Shippen was 10 years old at the time and befriended a young member of the Shinnecock tribe named Oscar Bunn. When Shinnecock Hills Golf Club opened in 1891, the two boys became caddies. Showing natural talent for the game, Shippen was taken under the wing of Shinnecock’s golf professional, Willie Dunn. He benefited from Dunn’s instruction, becoming an excellent golfer who was better than most members at this pioneering American golf club. Dunn rewarded Shippen with the assistant professional position, which allowed him the opportunity to give lessons, repair clubs and play the course regularly.
• Oscar Bunn, Oscar Bunn, a full-blooded Shinnecock Indian played in the 1896 US Open. Mr. Bunn was the first of his race to enter the US Open and the first Native American. His caddie roots served him well. Oscar Bunn, a 19-year-old Shinnecock, and John Shippen Jr., a 16-year-old African-American whose father was the pastor of the Shinnecock church. Bunn and Shippen had learned to play golf and to caddie from Willie Dunn, the pro at Shinnecock Hills.
