More than 5,000 golfers visit booth for new Tripp Davis, Justin Leonard collaboration at The Tribute Resort Community
(THE COLONY, Tex.) – The Old American Golf Club – designed by Tripp Davis and PGA TOUR/Ryder Cup star Justin Leonard – made a stellar debut North Texas Golf Expo (January 29 – 31), with more than 5,000 attendees visiting its booth to learn more about the course that has drawn acclaim from Golfweek, LINKS Magazine, USA Today, PGATOUR.com, the Dallas Morning News and Avid Golfer.
Davis, based in Norman, Oklahoma, spent time at The Old American booth to meet and greet area golfers. He was featured on the Tee Box Radio Show on 1310 AM “The Ticket,” and interviewed by long-time show host Rick Arnett. Hundreds of golfers registered to win The Old American’s “Preview Foursomes,” to be hosted between February 1 and April 30.
“We were blown away by the interest level and buzz surrounding The Old American at the North Texas Golf Expo,” says Jeff Kindred, General Manager. “As one of the only courses opening in Texas in 2010, golfers from around the state stopped by the booth to talk to us, pick up information, and register for the Preview Foursomes.”
Located at The Tribute Resort Community north of Dallas, The Old American is slated for soft opening in May and grand opening over Independence Day weekend, July 2 – 4, in concert with The Colony’s “Liberty by the Lake” fireworks celebration.
Inspired by the ‘Golden Age’ of golf course architecture between 1911 and 1937, Old American’s natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs.
Davis, an accomplished amateur player and former All-American at the University of Oklahoma and Leonard, who played his college golf at the University of Texas, toured and played several of America’s classic Golden Age golf courses prior to starting the design process for Old American.
The result is a golf course that emphasizes strategy and shot-making and flows with a natural rhythm from first tee to 18th green. Old American features six sets of tees, ranging from the 5215-yard forward markers to the 7174-yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Davis and Leonard conceived the routing and layout with both medal and match play in mind, as golfers are required to hold “steady to par” through a number of holes, but enticed to gamble on birdie or better during select stretches of the course.
