Owner of the No. 1-ranked golf school in the U.S., discusses the strategy behind the design of the Jim McLean Signature Course at Doral in Part II of “Classic Conversations” on TheGolfersNation.com
MIAMI, FL (February 23, 2010) – Jim McLean, ranked No. 4, on GOLF Magazine’s list of Top-100 Teachers in the world, and owner of the No. 1 Ranked Golf Schools in the U.S. is the subject of “Classic Conversations” on http://thegolfersnation.com.
In Part II of this conversation, McLean discusses several strategic decisions that must be considered when designing a golf course. These decisions include: shaping of fairways, bunker placement, the design of a green, and the playability of the golf course – especially on resort property. McLean, who oversaw the bunker renovation of the famed Blue Monster at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, completely reconstructed the resort’s Silver Course. Now known as the Jim McLean Signature Course, this 7,000+-yard layout has several unique features including a stretch of holes known as the Bermuda Triangle.
Very few golf instructors have been given the opportunity to design a golf course from the ground up, and McLean’s “masterpiece” has already drawn rave reviews. The first three holes, from the tips, are considered to be the toughest starting three holes on any golf course in Florida. McLean, who is mostly known for his ability to break down and analyze a golf swing, also worked with Tom Fazio to design a unique 9-hole golf course at the Jim McLean Golf Center-Texas, a learning facility that Fazio calls “The Best”.
