Hurdzan-Fry, Lehman design in top ten for fourth straight year
(SILVERTHORNE, CO.) – Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks (“Raven Three Peaks”) – the destination golf course in the famed Rocky Mountain ski resort region of Summit County – is ranked No. 7 in Colorado by Golfweek in its 2010 edition of “Best You Can Play, State-by-State” rankings.
This distinction marks the fourth consecutive year the Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Tom Lehman-designed course has ranked in the top 10. The survey, which included hundreds of Colorado courses, examined overall strength of routing, feature shaping, natural setting, greens, variety and memorability of holes, conditioning and maintenance, landscape management and other criteria. The full list of courses is available in the March 12 issue of Golfweek.
“We are honored that Raven Three Peaks has once again been included in Golfweek’s prestigious list of the state’s best golf courses,” says Rhonda Boutelle, General Manager. “With its dramatic mountain terrain and stirring vistas, Colorado is home to a high number of noteworthy golf courses. For Raven Three Peaks to be ranked in the top 10 is a testament to the course’s design, conditioning, service and popularity with avid golfers.”
Located off the first exit west of the I-70 Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel (205), Raven Three Peaks is an hour’s drive from Denver and less than 30 minutes from the famous resort ski towns of Vail, Keystone, Copper Mountain and Breckenridge.
With the avid local and regional golfer in mind, the course recently announced its Summit County resident ($1,750 individual), non-resident ($2,150 individual, $2,350 family) and corporate ($5,000) annual passes. Passes include greens fees, range balls, discounts on guest play and merchandise and USGA handicap fee.
Situated at an elevation of more than 9,000 feet, golfers enjoy temperatures up to 20 degrees cooler than Denver, stunning views of Buffalo Mountain, lush Aspen groves, and some of the most dramatic golf holes in the state – all on a layout ranked among the best in Colorado by Golfweek, Golf World, GOLF Magazine, Golf Digest and the prestigious ZAGAT survey.

About Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks
Opened in 2000, Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry (Hurdzan/Fry Environmental Golf Design) and British Open Champion and PGA Tour player Tom Lehman. It was the fourth “Raven” branded course in America and remains the only Raven facility in Colorado.
Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks is a rare combination of a championship layout set against a panorama of towering pines, snow-capped mountains, mountain streams and wildflower meadows. In creating one of the great golf experiences in the American West, Hurdzan/Fry and Lehman utilized the routing of the former Dick’s Phelps-designed Eagle’s Nest Golf Course to create a playing surface on which every hole, landing area and shot value maintains its design integrity and takes advantage of the site’s natural terrain.
The front nine climbs toward the upper reaches of the golf course, culminating at the 533-yard, par-5 sixth hole (“Warriors Mark”), the highest point on the golf course. In plain view from the tee box are the signature “Three Peaks” for which the course is named. The back nine flows across the distinctive mountainous terrain, leveling off relative to roller-coast ride out yet still choc-full of dramatic shot-making.
Raven Golf Club and Three Peaks closes with one of the strongest finishing stretches Colorado, with the final four holes providing a PGA Tour-level ending to an unforgettable round of golf. The 601-yard, par-5 16th features a 150-foot drop from the tee to the landing area below. It is an unforgettable prelude to the two final par 4s, stout two-shotters measuring 468 and 448 yards, respectively.
Unique to the region, Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks’ bunkers are patterned after the distinctive style first introduced by Alister Mackenzie at Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, and Kingston Heath. Steep faces and deep furrowed edges give way to native grasses perched at the edge of the sand. In addition to being visually dramatic, the “Mackenzie bunkers” frame the golf course and help contain tee shots that can have up to a 10-percent increase in carry due to the course elevation.
Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks 12,400-square-foot clubhouse features a “strong and clean” Alpine architectural style with a “mountain lodge” post-and-beam interior. It houses a fully-equipped pro shop, the “Raven Grill” serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, a member’s locker room with ample space for meetings and special events. A variety of membership levels are available for golfers desiring the benefits of a semi-private facility.
