(CAPE CHARLES, VA) – The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at Bay Creek Resort & Club – managed by Billy Casper Golf (BCG) – will host the 27th Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches April 17-18, 2010.
Contested between 14-player teams from Virginia and West Virginia, the tournament is one of the Virginia State Golf Association’s (VSGA) premier events. Players will compete in foursome, four ball and singles matches over the two-day event. Three points are awarded for each match: one point each for winning the outward nine, inward nine and overall match. Virginia holds the all-time series lead between the two teams with a 21-4-1 record.
“Bay Creek is a beautiful place with two phenomenal golf courses,” says Matt Smiley, Director of Competitions for the VSGA. “It will be great to have both teams on the Delmarva Peninsula this year and we expect the matches to be exciting.”
“We’re honored the VSGA has chosen Bay Creek to host this prestigious tournament,” says Mark Wesolek, General Manager of Bay Creek. “The course is in excellent condition and will challenge golfers to bring their ‘A’ games to this intense competition.”
With many holes along the Chesapeake Bay and Old Plantation Creek, the Nicklaus layout is lauded as a “player’s course,” providing diverse challenges for all skill levels. At 7,417 yards, the course features impeccable landscaping and is characterized by large waste bunkers and more than 100 formal bunkers. Natural beauty – with azaleas and roses blooming, shell cart paths, sea breezes, gulls swooping and the rare bald eagle – are a feast for the senses.
At 7,250 yards, the accompanying Arnold Palmer Signature Course spoils golfers with a calming seaside feel, natural sand dunes, five sets of tees and perfectly manicured fairways and greens.
Opened along with the Palmer course in 2001, the practice facilities at Bay Creek provide a great setting for player development. Whether guided by experienced PGA-certified instructors or working individually, golfers of all skill levels will benefit from the state-of-the-art range with five target greens and short game area featuring a chipping and putting green with bunkers.
Bay Creek is about 45 minutes north of the Norfolk airport, four hours southeast of Washington, D.C. and two hours east of Richmond, representing an easy weekend getaway year-round from anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic. In addition to championship golf, Bay Creek boasts a deepwater marina, boutique shopping, exquisite dining, walking trails, beaches and the endless natural beauty of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The Coach House replicates a 19th century stable and houses the Bay Creek Golf Shop and Coach House Tavern. The Aqua Restaurant, located in the heart of Bay Creek’s Marina Village, is a preferred destination for weddings and other social outings.
