ORLANDO, Fla. – March 17, 2010…Marriott Golf, one of the world’s premier golf operators, is pleased to announce that Anthony L. Williams, Director of Golf Course and Resort Grounds at Stone Mountain Golf Club in Stone Mountain, Ga., has been named the 2009 Superintendent of the Year by TurfNet, the leading online community for golf course superintendents, assistants, equipment technicians, university turf specialists and industry representatives.

The award is presented annually by TurfNet to a superintendent who demonstrates the ability to excel in one or more of the following areas: labor-management skills, maximizing budget limitations, educating and advancing the careers of colleagues and assistants, negotiating with government agencies, preparing for tournaments under unusual circumstances, service to golf clientele, upgrading or renovating the course and dealing with extreme or emergency conditions.

“I’m thrilled to be receiving this prestigious award from TurfNet,” said Williams. “Everyday my team and I work tirelessly to enhance the Stone Mountain facility and continually improve the experience for our golfers.”

Throughout his career, Williams has received a number of awards and accolades for his dedication and hard work towards environmental stewardship. Some of his accomplishments include being a three-time GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders in Golf Award-winner and a two-time Marriott Golf Grounds Professional of the Year. In 2008, Williams was honored with the J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence for his record of success in directing golf grounds operations at two distinguished Marriott Golf-managed properties, the Renaissance Pine Isle Resort and Stone Mountain Golf Club. That same year, Williams received the J. Lamar Branch Alumni Award for outstanding agricultural leadership from his alma mater, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. Most recently, Williams was listed among Golf Inc. magazine’s 2009 “20 Most Admired Operators” and received the 2010 President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America in February.

A Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, Marriott’s Stone Mountain Golf Club is a 36-hole public facility located 16 miles from Atlanta. Williams developed a maintenance plan that resulted in Marriott’s hotel property at Stone Mountain, the Evergreen Conference Resort, being recognized as the first hotel to become a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
