The President Country Club in West Palm Beach, FL, which sent two of its members to the World Golfers Championship in Spain last year, will host a qualifying at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 2 for the 2010 event.
The 18-hole qualifier will be played on the newly-designed Eagle Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course features water on 14 holes, plenty of waste areas covered by coquina sand and sawgrass bushes.
“With six different tee boxes, we will set up the course to fit everybody based on their flight,” said organizer Anders Bengtson, President of World Golfers USA. Call him at 561 313-9083 for more information or to enter.
The winner of each of the five handicap categories-0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25-will advance to the U.S. finals, scheduled Sept. 9-12 on the The Red and The Gold Courses at The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Litchfield, AZ.
The Red, designed by Robert (Red) Lawrence, meanders alongside streams and ponds between pines, cypress and eucalyptus trees, playing 6,852 yards with a course rating of 72.4 and slope of 126 from the blues, 6,291 yards with 69.4 and 118 numbers from the whites and 5,806 yards with 71.6 and 118 numbers from the reds
The Gold, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, is Jones’ West Coast version of the Firestone South Course and can be stretched to 7,430 yards with a course rating of 74.5 and 135. “Don’t worry, we aren’t playing back there,” Bengtson said. It plays 6,830 yards with 72.3 and 130 numbers from the Championship tees, 6,348 yards with 70.0 and 125 numbers and 5,885 yards with 72.3 and 119 numbers for women.
Then the five flight winners in this 36-hole competition earn expense-paid trips to Hua-Hin, Thailand to represent the U.S. in the 16th annual World Golfers Championship, scheduled Oct. 30-Nov. 6. More than 35 countries are expected to send teams this year.
Other country clubs and golf associations who wish to conduct qualifying events to participate in the tournament that gives amateur golfers of all ability levels chances to represent their country in a world-wide competition should go to www.worldgolfersusa.com and click on “Host an Event” or call 561 313-9083 for more details.
“It’s a great way for clubs to generate extra revenue,” said Bengtson, President of World Golfers USA.
