PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA – April 26, 2010 — When Joe Logan, the well-known national golf writer came out with his annual listing of “Dream 18” golf course holes in the Mid-Atlantic region for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News Golf Guide, it immediately became obvious that one golf course architect stood out above the rest. Ed Shearon, who is based in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, led the way with holes from two of his courses on the list. Logan’s “Dream 18” list was made up of holes from daily fee and municipal golf courses throughout Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He was the only architect with two holes selected.
The two Shearon-designed holes come from Raven’s Claw Golf Club in Limerick, PA and Vineyard Golf at Renault Winery Golf in Egg Harbor City, NJ.
Raven’s Claw’s 137-yard, par 3, No. 14 hole is loosely modeled after the famous 12th at Augusta National. It is surrounded by water, shaded by trees and called “Cathedral” on the scorecard – like the famous Masters par 3. The downhill shot to the angled green seldom requires more than a 9-iron, yet birdies are hard to come by.
Vineyard Golf’s hole No. 8, 322 yards, is one of the great short par 4 holes in the area. It offers strategic options for the tee shot, thanks to a narrow waste area that runs down the middle of the hole. The big hitters can take it directly over the waste bunker in an attempt to drive the green and a chance at eagle; More cautious options are narrow fairways to the right or the left, that often leave a tricky short wedge shot to the green. “It’s all about risk and reward,” states Shearon.
