Superintendents support research efforts to find a cure for autism

Visalia, Calif. – Golf course superintendents and affiliate members from the GCSA of Central California (GCSACC) have reached out to others through their annual fundraising campaign. At Visalia Country Club more than 100 GCSACC members and industry vendors participated in a charity golf tournament with proceeds directed to Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization that helps brighten the future for those who struggle with autism spectrum disorders.
“Our chapter president Mike Swing, CGCS, along with the support of fellow directors, staff members and chapter vendors, did a tremendous job in hosting our annual benefit tournament,” stated GCSACC Association Manager Irene Cline. “The event demonstrates our commitment to support worthwhile causes which improve the quality of life for others…and Autism Speaks is one of them.”
According GCSACC sponsor Scott Furtak, his parent company Ewing Irrigation has encouraged its employees to join in the efforts to help raise funds for Autism Speaks. “I am proud to announce that the monies raised from the GCSACC coupled with those raised by Ewing Irrigation employees have been increased with a matching fund from the owners of Ewing, bringing the charitable donation to $25,000,” shared Furtak. “We recognize the good work of Autism Speaks and this is an excellent way for Ewing and the GCSACC to support such a worthy cause.”
The first GCSACC annual charity tournament was launched in 2003 under the dedicated leadership of golf course superintendent Lowell Stone, a founding member of the organization. Since then, funds have been raised annually for a variety of worthy organizations that focus on research, education, and community outreach programs. The GCSAA and its Central California Chapter are dedicated to serving its members, advancing their profession and enhancing the enjoyment, growth and vitality of the game while working diligently to expand golf’s positive environmental impact. Additionally, through their compassionate benevolence golf course superintendents give of their time, skills and resources to help their colleagues and communities.
