Registration now open for popular Father’s Day weekend tournament
ORLANDO, Fla., (May 11, 2010) – Golfweek magazine – the publication preferred by serious golfers – will host its annual Father & Son Open this Father’s Day weekend (June 18-20) at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Celebrating its 27th year, this popular event gathers teams from across the country for both friendly sport and the presentation of the Father of the Year award.
“Golfweek’s Father & Son Open has been a long-standing tradition since 1983 because it encourages families to come out and compete together on some of golf’s greatest courses,” said Armand Cimaroli, Golfweek’s director of events. “It is this opportunity for camaraderie that keeps so many teams coming back year after year.”
Open to amateur and professional golfers of all ages, Golfweek’s exciting tournament offers a two-man, 36-hole Modified Chapman (alternate shot) format. The field will be divided into flights according to combined handicaps, and the event will be played on The Champion and Palmer courses at PGA National Resort & Spa, home to the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) and the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams in each flight.
In conjunction with the tournament, Golfweek will also present its 2010 Father of the Year award, an annual honor given to a father who has made an ongoing commitment and contribution to the game. This year’s award goes to Tom Nieporte, 81, who had a distinguished career on the PGA Tour – playing in 13 PGA Championships as well as the 1965 Masters – before serving as Winged Foot Golf Club’s head golf professional for 28 years. During his time at Winged Foot, Nieporte mentored countless PGA professionals and members, building a reputation as both a great teacher and a caring man. A father of nine, Nieporte is now the head professional emeritus at Winged Foot and continues to tee it up four days a week with club members. With this award, Nieporte will join a long line of noteworthy Father of the Year honorees, including Karsten Solheim, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Billy Casper.
