The Grand Oaks Golf Club in Grand Prairie will host an 18-hole qualifying for the World Golfers Championship in conjunction with the ESPN Golf Connection Tour Monday, June 7.
The par 71 Don January-designed semi-private club, set in a tranquil setting with century-old oaks trees, has been restored to create some of the original shot making demands.
Golfers in the Dallas area wishing to enter the qualifying scheduled to start at 9 a.m. should contact James McAfee at 214 724-1261 or onthetee18@msn.com by the June 4 deadline. Entry fee is $75 and all golfers with receive a goody bag valued at more than $50 from The Golf Connection.
The winner of each of the five handicap categories-0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25-will advance to the U.S. finals, scheduled Sept. 9-12 on the The Red and The Gold Courses at The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Litchfield, AZ.
The Red meanders alongside streams and ponds between pines, cypress and eucalyptus trees, playing 6,852 yards with a course rating of 72.4 and slope of 126 from the blues, 6,291 yards with 69.4 and 118 numbers from the whites and 5,806 yards with 71.6 and 118 numbers from the reds.
The Gold was Jones’ West Coast version of the Firestone South Course and can be stretched to 7,430 yards with a course rating of 74.5 and 135. “Don’t worry, we aren’t playing back there,” said Anders Bengtson, President of World Golfers USA. It plays 6,830 yards with 72.3 and 130 numbers from the Championship tees, 6,348 yards with 70.0 and 125 numbers and 5,885 yards with 72.3 and 119 numbers for women.
Then the five flight winners in this 36-hole competition earn expense-paid trips to Hua-Hin, Thailand to represent the U.S. in the 16th annual World Golfers Championship, scheduled Oct. 30-Nov. 6. More than 35 countries are expected to send teams this year.
