(SHENZHEN, China) — Terrence Ng of Hong Kong has shown his potential as a future champion, winning the third edition of the Mission Hills Jack Nicklaus Junior Championship in Shenzhen, China.
After leading by one stroke overnight from fellow Hong Konger Liu Lok Tin, Ng recorded a final round of 3-under-par 69 on Mission Hills’ Jack Nicklaus-designed World Cup Course to finish at 8-under 208. Liu finished two shots behind in second, with China’s Liang Zheng another five shots adrift in third place at 1-under 215.
As reward for victory, Ng not only earned maximum points on The R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking — offered at the event for the first time — but also a place in September’s Duke of York Young Champions Trophy in England.
Overall girls’ champion, Zhang Yu Shan of China, also qualified for the Duke of York tournament, which will be played at the famed Royal St. George’s G.C, September 14-16.
In addition, it was announced today that both champions, plus the top-three finishers in each age group, secured berths in the 17th Nicklaus Junior Championship. It will be held in July in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Hong Kong’s Steven Lam, the 2009 champion, could only manage a closing 76 to finish T-5.
The other winners, by category, from the field of 68 players were:
Under 18 Boys Liu Lok Tin, Hong Kong
Under 18 Girls Lee Chia Pei, Chinese Taipei
Under 15 Boys Robbie Thomas, United Kingdom
Under 15 Girls Yin Yuan Ru, China
In addition to the Mission Hills Jack Nicklaus Junior Championship, Mission Hills’ other commitments to junior golf include its role as official home of the Faldo Series Asia, creation of the Mission Hills Golf Series Junior Tour, instruction programs at its three golf academies specifically geared toward young players, and regular scheduling of clinics from greats of the game like Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Vijay Singh.
