The Northern California PGA Foundation announced that it will honor golf legends Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum at “The Langley,” the Foundation’s high-profile annual fundraiser to be held August 30-31. Watson, who can be seen next week at the U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach, will return to The Links at Spanish Bay for The Langley tournament. Both Stanford alumni, Watson and Tatum each achieved excellence in golf in their own right – Watson, as a PGA TOUR Player and Tatum, as a Past USGA President. The Northern California PGA Foundation is dedicated to providing resources to golf programs that enrich life’s positive values.
“We’re thrilled to have remarkable leaders as Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum as our honored guests at this year’s event,” commented Nancy Maul, the Foundation’s managing director. “Their involvement will make this a successful event through which we can support many worthwhile charitable programs.”
Watson spent more than 25 years on the PGA TOUR, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest golfers, dominating the tour from 1977-1984. During that time he won Player of the Year Honors six times. He won the Masters in 1977 and 1981 and grabbed the U.S. Open Championship in 1982. Through his competitive excellence, Watson achieved five British Open titles (1975-77-80-82-83) and was the TOUR’s leading money winner five times. Overall he has won a total of 39 tournaments on the PGA TOUR.
Tatum was a member of Stanford University’s golf team, which won back-to-back NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in 1941 and 1942. He also won the NCAA individual title in 1942 and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. Focusing on the business side of golf, Tatum served on the USGA Executive Committee from 1972-1980 and was President of the USGA from 1978-1980. In addition to serving the golf community, Tatum has generously given his energies towards improving his community at large serving as chairman, president and member of various councils, societies and associations. He has been involved in numerous golf restoration, renovation and design projects throughout California, including the successful renovation of Harding Park Golf Club in San Francisco in the early 2000’s. He was also involved in the design and development, along side Tom Watson and Robert Trent Jones II, of The Links at Spanish Bay Golf Course and co-designed The Preserve in Monterey and Stonetree Golf Club in Marin County.

About the NCPGA Foundation
The NCPGA Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives and communities of those in Northern California and Northwestern Nevada. Programs that have benefited include Saving Strokes, which uses golf as a rehabilitative tool for people who have had stroke; junior golf programs, which support youth who may not afford the opportunity to learn not only to play the game but also the many social and life skills associated; and programs for the disabled that help those who may have been denied access.
In its first two years, The Langley has won the support of two of golf’s biggest names and humanitarians. Arnold Palmer in year one and Ken Venturi in 2009 were honored for their achievements, in addition to the tournament’s namesake, Jim Langley, former TOUR player and long-time head golf professional at Cypress Point Club.
This year’s tournament will be held at The Links at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, California on August 30 and 31. For information about playing in the tournament or supporting the works of the NCPGA Foundation with a charitable donation, contact Nancy Maul at (707) 449-4742 or nmaul@pgahq.com.
