Chris Berra, Bill Criteser, Tom Pritchard and Arky Muscato set the pace in their respective flights in an 18-hole qualifier for World Golfers Championship at the Sun City (AZ) Country Club.
They advance to the U.S. finals, scheduled Sept. 9-12 on the The Red and The Gold Courses at The Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in nearby Litchfield, AZ.
The Red meanders alongside streams and ponds between pines, cypress and eucalyptus trees, playing 6,852 yards with a course rating of 72.4 and slope of 126 from the blues, 6,291 yards with 69.4 and 118 numbers from the whites and 5,806 yards with 71.6 and 118 numbers from the reds.
The Gold was Jones’ West Coast version of the Firestone South Course and can be stretched to 7,430 yards with a course rating of 74.5 and 135. “Don’t worry, we aren’t playing back there,” said James McAfee, tournament director of World Golfers USA. It plays 6,830 yards with 72.3 and 130 numbers from the Championship tees, 6,348 yards with 70.0 and 125 numbers from the members tees and 5,885 yards with 72.3 and 119 numbers for women.
Then the five flight (0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25) winners in this 36-hole competition earn expense-paid trips to Hua-Hin, Thailand to represent the U.S. in the 16th annual World Golfers Championship, scheduled Oct. 30-Nov. 6. More than 35 countries are expected to send teams this year.
