PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, June 24, 2010 – The first semi-final for the EWGA Championship, considered the world’s largest amateur women’s golf competition, will be held on Saturday, June 26 at the PGA National Resort & Spa -Haig Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Competing in the South and Central Florida district semi-final are chapter championship winners representing nine EWGA chapters: Brevard County/Space Coast, Fort Lauderdale Area, Manatee County, Miami, Naples, Palm Beach County, Polk County, Port St. Lucie-Treasure Coast and Tampa Bay.
From April through July, depending on the area’s golf season, more than 120 EWGA (Executive Women’s Golf Association) chapters throughout the United States and Canada hold local championship competitions. At the chapter level, EWGA members compete in individual stoke play in five flights based on USGA handicaps and a scramble team competition. Low gross and low net winners in each flight and the winning scramble team then compete in one of 15 semi-final competitions held throughout the United States. (see locations below).
Semi-final winners will compete in the 36-hole championship finals at Geneva National Resort & Golf Club, Lake Geneva, Wis., on October 1 -2, 2010. Now in its 15th year, this annual competition had over 2400 participants in 2009.
“The EWGA Championship is a premier event for women of all playing ability levels. For some of our members who did not grow up playing sports, this is one of their first experiences in competitive play,” says Pam Swensen, CEO of the EWGA. “The growth and continued excellence of the EWGA Championship demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing women with more opportunities through the game of golf.”
At each semi-final and the Championship Finals, “gently used” golf clubs will be collected as part of the EWGA Foundation’s ‘Drive for Dreams’ campaign, this year benefiting Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere (GIVE); and Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA). The club donations are monetized, turning unwanted golf clubs into cash donations to the EWGA Foundation based on their fair market trade-in values with the support of the PGA of America and PGA Trade-in Network to facilitate the process.
Founded in 1991, the EWGA is dedicated to connecting women to learn, play, and enjoy golf for business and fun. There are currently over 120 chapters throughout the United States with international chapters in Canada. The chapters provide a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers.
The EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. For more information about the association and its membership, visit www.ewga.com
