Over 3,000 people played on the Full Swing Golf simulator in the Lexus tent at Pebble Beach last week in a closest to the hole contest. Set on the beautiful but daunting 17th hole at Pebble Beach, participants took their best shot at the par 3 hole – cradled by numerous bunkers and surrounded by rocky coastline. The winner, Steven Orusa, made a hole in one to win an all expenses paid trip for 2 to next years U.S. Open at the Congressional in Washington D.C.
Each contestant had 3 attempts to go for the big prize, while a lot of action was going on inside the tent such autograph sessions and appearances by Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Annika Sorentstam, Nick Watney, and Peter Jacobsen. Lexus and the USGA also wanted to re-create one of the greatest golf shots ever hit, according to Jack Nicklaus. Tom Watson won the 1982 US Open at Pebble Beach by chipping in for a birdie on the 17th hole to seal the victory.
Adjacent to people playing on this world famous hole in the golf simulator were replays of the actual shot on a giant video screen with commentary by Tom Watson. The real wedge he used to hit the shot was also on display for all to enjoy. Coupled with an actual appearance from Tom Watson – who at 60 years old made the cut at Pebble and can still tee it up with the best of them – there is no doubt why the queue lines into the simulator were over 100 yards long to experience all of this inside the Lexus Tent.
With over 9,000 shots fired on the sim in 7 days, the Full Swing Golf Simulator performed flawlessly with the typical zero down time. Many of the participants commented that it was like playing the real 17th hole, which was only a few hundred yards away.
77: The number of hours that the simulator performed over seven days without any calibration and with no down time. The simulator will actually run for years with no calibration necessary.
