Professional Golfer Bubba Watson Wins And Announces Commitment to Caddy For A Cure
Coral Springs, FL., July 6, 2010 – Caddy For A Cure, Inc., the program that offers a chance to caddie for a day for the world’s best golfers, is proud to announce the recent donation commitment from PGA TOUR player and 2010 Travelers Championship winner, Bubba Watson. Watson, largely known for being one of the longest ball strikers on the TOUR, is also one of the most generous and definitely a man of his word. Prevailing in a 2-hole play-off against 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, Corey Pavin and 5-time PGA TOUR winner, Scott Verplank, Watson posted his first PGA TOUR victory. But rather than having someone go inside the ropes for the day as his caddie during his official practice or Pro am round, Watson put his own spin on participating by making a commitment to donate to Caddy For A Cure upon a win.
When Watson won on Sunday, he not only showed his will to win, he showed his integrity and heart. Watson, a devout Christian, praised the Lord, hugged his wife Angie and cried for his cancer-stricken father. Then, when asked what it meant to him to have his first TOUR win, he responded, “It’s, well, overwhelming.” He said his accomplishments on the golf course help him with charitable work off it. “I will always continue to be charitable…in fact I don’t like people caddying for me, but I told Russ at Caddy For a Cure, that if I ever won on TOUR, I would announce on national television that I am donating $50,000 to CFAC.” And now, over a year after Watson made this pledge to Holden, he has honored his word.
Russ Holden, Caddy For A Cure Founder, CEO and former PGA TOUR caddie commented, “Our program offers golf fans opportunities with the best players in the world and Bubba definitely fits into that group. Although someone didn’t get the opportunity to spend a day with Bubba inside the ropes as a caddie, everyone can get a feel for what a great guy he is, not only as a golfer, but through his integrity and commitment to help others.” Holden continued, “The timing of Bubba’s donation is perfect for supporting research into Fanconi anemia and its high connection with cancer, particularly given the issues Bubba’s family is facing with his father. Advances have been made in developing therapeutics for treating Fanconi anemia that show significant hope for potentially preventing cancer. We are truly grateful for the help from all players in supporting our cause, but Bubba Watson has taught us all a lesson in gratitude.”
Caddy For A Cure offers its caddie experiences from its website, www.caddyforacure.com, with auctions for each player. 100% of auction proceeds go to charity and caddie participation is fully tax deductible as allowed by law. The benefitting charities include the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, United States wounded warriors, the PGA TOUR Caddie Benevolent Fund and multiple charities selected by the PGA TOUR players and tournaments.
