(CAPE CHARLES, VA) – The Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer Signature Courses at Bay Creek Resort & Club – managed by Billy Casper Golf (BCG) – will host the 3rd Annual Bay Creek Amateur July 31 to August 1, 2010.
For the second consecutive year, the 36-hole individual stroke play tournament – contested among nearly 100 golfers – is a Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) points event. Players accrue points (based on their finishes) toward their overall state rankings and compete for an approximately $7,000 purse.
The tournament is open to male golfers of all ages with a VSGA / USGA handicap index established at a VSGA member course and meet the USGA Rules of Amateur Status. The $180 entry fee includes greens and cart fees, practice balls, GPS on the carts, lunch both days and prizes. Participants can play an optional practice round anytime leading up to the tournament for $30. The entry deadline is Sunday, July 25.
“The Bay Creek Amateur is one of the premier events in the Mid-Atlantic for amateur golfers,” says Mark Wesolek, General Manager of Bay Creek. “Both courses provide unique challenges and are tournament-ready for two days of competitive golf and camaraderie.”
With many holes along the Chesapeake Bay and Old Plantation Creek, the Nicklaus layout is lauded as a “player’s course,” providing diverse challenges for all skill levels. At 7,417 yards, the course features impeccable landscaping and is characterized by large waste bunkers and more than 100 formal bunkers. Natural beauty – with azaleas and roses blooming, shell cart paths, sea breezes, gulls swooping and the rare bald eagle – are a feast for the senses.
At 7,250 yards, the accompanying Arnold Palmer Signature Course spoils golfers with a calming seaside feel, natural sand dunes, five sets of tees and perfectly manicured fairways and greens.
Opened along with the Palmer course in 2001, the practice facilities at Bay Creek provide a great setting for player development. Whether guided by experienced PGA-certified instructors or working individually, golfers of all skill levels will benefit from the state-of-the-art range with five target greens and short game area featuring a chipping and putting green with bunkers.
Bay Creek is about 45 minutes north of the Norfolk airport, four hours southeast of Washington, D.C. and two hours east of Richmond, representing an easy weekend getaway year-round from anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic. In addition to championship golf, Bay Creek boasts a deepwater marina, boutique shopping, exquisite dining, walking trails, beaches and the endless natural beauty of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The Coach House replicates a 19th century stable and houses the Bay Creek Golf Shop and Coach House Tavern. The Aqua Restaurant, located in the heart of Bay Creek’s Marina Village, is a preferred destination for weddings and other social outings.
