Tinley Park, IL, July 14, 2010 – When it comes to playing a links style golf course like the Old Course at St. Andrews, site of this year’s 150th Anniversary Open Championship, PGA Tour player Brian Gay will take his trusty Bettinardi BB8 Tour prototype and approach the greens with a slightly different mindset.
“How could you not,” said Gay, who will play in his first Open Championship. “I’ve played at a number of links style courses, but none as grand as the Old Course. St. Andrews, especially, will require a great short game. The bump and run and lag putting will be key in my approach to playing the Old Course.”
Gay, who has played with a Bettinardi putter for years, including his three PGA Tour wins, heads into the Open Championship with a pair of top10 finishes, has made the cut in 14 of the 19 events and currently stands at #38 in the Fed Ex Cup standings with more than $1.2 million in earnings.
“Brian is consistently ranked in the top 10 for his putting stats on the PGA Tour and rolls the ball exceptionally well.” stated Bob Bettinardi.
Gay finished the 2009 season ranked #4 in 2009 PGA Tour Putts Per Round with an average of 28.11 and recently posted his best position on the year-end 2009 money list (13th). Finishing among the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings (based on his 2009 performance) earned Gay entry into all four majors in 2010 – The Masters, The U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and The PGA Championship.
