15th Annual Summer Camp Golf Program Promotes Positive Life Skills
(Carmel, CA. July 18, 2010) At-risk youth from around the country continue to learn and develop positive life skills through their exposure to the game of golf thanks to the Shivas Irons Society Scholarship Fund.
From July 18 – 22, for the fifteenth straight summer, the Shivas Irons Society is sponsoring a group of at-risk youth for a one-week camp at the Tennessee PGA Junior Golf Academy in Franklin, TN. Participants this year have been selected from Chicago’s Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation, Brownsville, KY and Nashville, TN. In addition to camp tuition the Society provides, when necessary, air transportation and a clothing allowance and spending money for the participants.
Since the inception of this program in 1995 the Society has provided more than $150,000 in scholarship funds.
“It is our hope that this will be a life changing experience for our recipients.” says Steve Cohen president of the Society, “Enjoyment of golf is central, but in the long run the program is more about exposure to diversity and developing leadership than it is about teaching golf skills,” he adds.
Through the camp and follow-up contact, the Society provides opportunities for personal growth and self-awareness for the attendees. In addition to golf instruction, the juniors are exposed to and educated in the traditions, history and virtues of the game of golf. They learn how to apply the positive attributes that the game offers into their daily lives while they realize improvements in their own level of play. As part of the camp experience the juniors are sometimes hosted by local members of the Shivas Irons Society during their visit to Tennessee.
The Shivas Irons Society is 501c(3) non-profit organization, founded in 1992 and dedicated to providing opportunities for community, discovery and transformation through golf. The Society, which has members around the world, takes its name from the protagonist in Michael Murphy’s classic novel, Golf in the Kingdom.
