ORLANDO, FL (August 2, 2010) — Only a 10-foot, 10-inch putt stood between Stuart Appleby and history. Sink the putt for a birdie two, and Appleby would become only the fifth player in PGA Tour history to record a 59 in competition. Miss it, and his would be just another low number during the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.
It is the kind of moment Appleby had been preparing for during his work with Dr. Gio Valiante’s Fearless Golf Program. Valiante is a professor of psychology at Rollins College in Orlando, and Appleby began working with him in the beginning of 2009.
The work paid off. Appleby sank the putt for the remarkable 59, and captured his first PGA Tour victory in four years.
“I was quite comfortable,” Appleby said. “It’s not a nerve-racking thing to be involved in. I had a lot of opportunities and I made them. It was great to do that to win the tournament.”
