(Londonderry, New Hampshire) – Renowned Danish shoemaker ECCO confirms that staff player Stuart Appleby wore its luxurious World Class GTX golf shoes en route to winning the Greenbrier Classic this past weekend, while Fred Couples chose the company’s New Classic Premier model during his runner-up finish at the U.S. Senior Open.
Competing in soggy conditions on the Old White course in White Sulphur Springs, WV, Appleby captured his first win since 2006 and became only the fifth player in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59. Riding a hot putter and stellar ball-striking, the 39-year-old Aussie carded nine birdies and an eagle during the final round, good enough for a one-shot victory.
“I was quite comfortable,” Appleby said. “It’s not a nerve-racking thing to be involved in. I had a lot of opportunities and I made them. It was great to do that to win the tournament.”
For his part, Couples recorded his second runner-up finish at a Champions Tour major this season, finishing three shots back at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, WA.
“Stuart pulled out a pretty amazing performance yesterday, and it mirrors the growing trend of players worldwide competing and winning in ECCO,” says Jesper Thuen, Sponsor and Event Manager, ECCO Golf. “This includes our staff players, as well as dozens of other top-ranked pros who simply choose to wear our shoes because they help them perform their best when it counts the most.”
In addition to Appleby and Couples, ECCO golf shoes are worn in competition by scores of international Tour stars, including Aaron Baddeley, Colin Montgomerie, Thongchai Jaidee, Arjun Atwal, John Bickerton, Bradley Dredge and many others.
