About American Lake Veterans Golf Course
In 1955 the American Lake Veterans Golf Course was built on the Veterans Administration Hospital grounds in Lakewood, Wash., near Tacoma and Seattle. Situated on 377 acres, the nine-hole course was designed to assist in the rehabilitation of World War II and Korean War veterans.
The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is dedicated to providing, teaching and promoting the benefits of golf to veterans. VA Puget Sound Health Care System has a population of in-patient and out-patient veterans who have disabilities. The American Lake Veterans Golf Course features front-nine/back-nine tee boxes (par 35 + 36 = 71). It is operated and maintained by an all-volunteer force consisting of maintenance, operations and management personnel. The golf course is not supported by government funds. Operating and capital costs are paid with annual pass and daily-fee revenues.
Golf legend and internationally-known golf-course designer Jack Nicklaus is donating his design services for the expansion of the course to 18 holes. Ken Still, a Tacoma native and a 1969 Ryder Cup member with Nicklaus, is a board member and volunteer for Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf course. Still recruited his lifelong friend Nicklaus to help with the renovation and expansion plans at the unique facility near the VA Hospital in Lakewood, Wash. The “Friends”, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, launched a $3-million capital campaign for constructing the “new nine” (www.veterangolf.org).
