BURNSVILLE, N.C. – Tom Horan celebrated his 56th birthday in style on Aug. 10 by earning the deciding point in North Carolina’s first-ever victory over Tennessee in the annual Battle of the Smokies Media Golf Challenge.
Horan, who owns the Speaking of Golf radio show based in Asheville, N.C., made par on the 18th hole of his final match to give the home team 37 points in the Ryder Cup-style event. North Carolina added another half point for the final 37½-34½ score at Mount Mitchell Golf Club in Burnsville, N.C.
The Battle of the Smokies has been contested annually since 2008 between teams of media from North Carolina and Tennessee. Tennessee won the first two matchups, and it was a close battle throughout all four rounds in 2010.
Horan, who has played the Battle of the Smokies each year, was a contributor throughout all three days, earning 4½ of a possible eight points in his matches.
Mount Mitchell Golf Club, which is open to the public, served as a superb venue for the Battle of the Smokies. The course is located in southern Yancey County at the base of famed Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet in elevation.
“Mount Mitchell is a wonderful golf course in a beautiful setting, and I want to thank the club on behalf of the North Carolina team and the Tennessee team,” said North Carolina captain Dave Droschak. “It was great fellowship and fun golf.”
The North Carolina win sets the stage for a spirited rematch next year on the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains.
