(Londonderry, New Hampshire) – Renowned Danish shoemaker ECCO confirms that staff player Arjun Atwal wore its luxurious World Class GTX golf shoes en route to winning the Wyndham Championship this past weekend at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC.
Atwal, who displays the ECCO logo on his shirt collar, opened with a remarkable 61 and finished the week at 20-under 260. His one-stroke victory distinguished him as the first Monday qualifier to win on Tour since 1986, and the first Indian-born player to capture a PGA Tour title.
“As soon as I Monday qualified, I told my caddy we’ve got nothing to lose this week,” said Atwal. “I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. It obviously was a long time dream of mine to win out here.”
The 37-year-old’s previous accomplishments include being the first player from India to win on the PGA European Tour, and the first player of any nationality to surpass US$1 million in career Asian PGA Tour earnings. Atwal had to earn his way into the Wyndham Championship after losing his PGA Tour card last month because he was too low on the money list when a minor medical exemption ran out.
“Arjun has been tremendously successful competing all over the world, and along the way has become a true global ambassador for the sport,” says Jesper Thuen, Sponsor and Event Manager, ECCO Golf. “For him to win in this manner and against heavy odds really speaks to his mental toughness and impressive skills.”
In addition to Atwal, ECCO golf shoes are worn in competition by scores of international Tour stars, including Fred Couples, Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Thongchai Jaidee, John Bickerton, Bradley Dredge, Thomas Bjorn and many others.
