Ryder Cup Captains Have ‘Mind-Boggling’ Number of Pairings Options, According to GolfTripGenius.com

WAYNE, PA. (Aug. 27, 2010) – If Ryder Cup captains Corey Pavin and Colin Montgomerie spent each waking minute leading up to the matches at Celtic Manor trying to figure out the best combination of players to put on the course and in which order, they wouldn’t come close to exhausting all of the possibilities, according to GolfTripGenius.com, a web-based service that helps golfers plan trips, set up pairings and manage scoring and reporting.

Using the company’s sophisticated software and advanced mathematical algorithms, GolfTripGenius President Mike Zisman says there are 1,247,400 ways that Pavin and Montgomerie could order their players for the fourball and foursomes competitions and even more options for the singles matches.

“The possibilities are mind-boggling,” says Zisman.

The captains must choose eight of their 12 players to send out, and from that group pick two for each of the four pairings. Over the four rounds of foursomes and fourball matches, the captains have to make this decision 24 times; so the possible number of schedules over the four rounds is 1,247,400 to the power of four, or 2.42 times a trillion times a trillion.

The mathematical permutations don’t get any easier for the final day of singles matches, according to Zisman, who founded GolfTripGenius to make it easy for golf trip organizers to handle many of the time-intensive chores associated with single-and multi-day trips. “There are 479,001,600 different options for the singles matches alone,” he says.

Combining the four sessions on Friday and Saturday with Sunday’s singles, Pavin and Montgomerie are faced with enough options to melt the silicon in a supercomputer. And how many is that?

“It’s 1,155 times a million times a trillion times a trillion,” says Zisman. “It’s a big number.”

If anyone is wondering, the number is 1,155,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

So the next time you consider being the leader of a golf trip, you might want to add some fresh batteries to your calculator – or let GolfTripGenius do the math.
