ROSCOMMON, Mich. — Military families are benefiting from a charitable donation made by Forest Dunes Golf Club in honor of Patriot Day on Saturday, Sept. 11.
Forest Dunes Golf Club donated $10 from each round of golf played on Patriot Day to the Folds of Honor Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization with a mission to empower deserving military families with educational support and opportunities.
Forest Dunes’ and patrons’ contributions to the organization totaled $1,080.
In addition, Forest Dunes honored military personnel and those who lost their lives in the
Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with a flag competition on Patriot Day. Participants added their USGA handicap to par in order to establish an allotted number of strokes. Once the competitor reached their allotted number of shots, they placed an American flag at the point on the course where their ball ended. The golfer who staked his/her flag the furthest around the course was the winner.
Forest Dunes Golf Club member Tom Bommarito won the competition.
“This was a tremendous opportunity for Forest Dunes Golf Club to align itself with a great organization and cause,” Head Professional Donny Fisher said. “Every citizen has a reason to be thankful for the efforts of our armed forces and we were all impacted in some way by the events of 9/11.
“The Folds of Honor Foundation is the vision of a PGA Professional who also serves in the military. We were honored to host one of the many Patriot Day events that took place throughout the golf industry.”
The Folds of Honor Foundation provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of their military service to our great nation. The foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A Major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney served three combat tours in Iraq. After returning from his second tour, Major Rooney witnessed a profound situation that drove him to create the Folds of Honor Foundation.
