PGA Tour star breaks previous mark held by British Open champion,
co-designer Justin Leonard
(THE COLONY, Tex.) – In firing a 2-under-par 69 on Friday, PGA TOUR Star K.J. Choi set the course record at The Old American Golf Club, the Dallas area’s newest high-end golf course designed by Tripp Davis and British Open champion Justin Leonard.
Choi, who has won seven times on the PGA TOUR including victories at the Memorial, AT&T National and Sony Open, broke the previous record of 70 set by Leonard shot from the aptly named “Leonard” back tees. A Dallas resident who was deeply involved in each phase of The Old American’s design and evolution, Leonard consulted with Davis on professional-level shot values and features.
“The Old American is a great course,” says Choi. “It is challenging, strategic and requires golfers to play with precision if they want to score well.”
“K.J.’s mix of power and placement matches up well against The Old American, and the course acquitted itself nicely against one of the world’s premier players,” says Leonard. “I look forward to getting back out there and taking a shot at his 69.”
Opened this month, The Old American emphasizes strategy and flows with a natural rhythm from first tee to 18th green. The course features six sets of tees, ranging from the 5215-yard forward markers to the 7174-yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Davis and Leonard conceived the routing and layout with both medal and match play in mind, as golfers are required to hold “steady to par” through a number of holes, but enticed to gamble on birdie or better during select stretches of the course.

About The Old American Golf Club
Inspired by the ‘Golden Age’ of golf course architecture between 1911 and 1937, The Old American’s natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs.
Davis, an accomplished amateur player and former All-American at the University of Oklahoma and Leonard, who played his college golf at the University of Texas, toured and played a handful of America’s classic Golden Age golf courses prior to starting the design process for The Old American.
