BRADENTON, Fla. – The Concession Golf Club, Golf Digest’s Best New Private Course of 2006, would like to extend their best wishes to Corey Pavin and the U.S. Ryder Cup team as they compete in the 2010 Ryder Cup at The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, Wales, Oct. 1-3.
The 520-acre award-winning Concession Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course designed in association with Tony Jacklin, was conceived in commemoration of the 1969 Ryder Cup singles match between the two where Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin. That gesture, known as “the concession,” rendered the two teams in a 17-17 tie. The United States retained the Ryder Cup having won it in 1967. That moment marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two men.
“We’ve really decided to embrace the Ryder Cup-like atmosphere,” said Bruce Cassidy, owner of The Concession Golf Club. “Shortly after I took over, one of the first things we did was host a Ryder Cup event with Medinah Country Club. In November, we will host two teams from the United Kingdom in a Ryder Cup-style match, and in December, we will host seven teams from across the United States in a weeklong Ryder Cup-style tournament. At The Concession, much like the Ryder Cup, it’s all about camaraderie and being able to have a club that’s not so stuffy. The Ryder Cup is very competitive, but it’s one of those great events where the players can relax and let their hair down some, the families get involved and the fans are a little more active. That’s the kind of club we strive to have here. Of course we have rules, but they aren’t so rigid that people can’t relax and enjoy themselves too.”
