BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The oldest and largest two-year golf college in the world, Golf Academy of America (GAA) reports student Mohammed Muazu of Nigeria was recently featured in the Nigerian Life newspaper. Now in his second semester at the GAA Orlando Campus, Muazu presents an inspiring story on his unusual introduction to the game of golf and his quick success has garnered international attention.
The Nigerian Life article showcases the efforts of Oando PLC, an energy company, to give talented young people in the African nation the opportunity to pursue their dreams. One of the best golfers within his age range in Nigeria, Muazu received a grant from Oando and is making the most of the opportunity.
According to an excerpt of the article, “Integrated energy solutions company Oando PLC has pledged to give talented Nigerian youths the leverage they need to actualise their dreams of attaining desired heights in whatever field of human endeavor they choose to become major players. This is as it emerged within the week that the firm has been supporting Mohammed Muazu’s dream of playing professional golf. Currently, Muazu is one of the best golfers in country within his age range and currently enjoys an 18-month full scholarship courtesy of Oando for an associate degree in Golf Management at the Golf Academy of America. Corporate Communications Manager of Oando, Orojimi Olumide, who spoke at a media briefing on the forthcoming Nigeria Cup at Ikoyi Club 1938 (golf section), said: “As a proud Nigerian firm, partnering with a club like Ikoyi Club is just one of the ways we impact on our society and we will not relent. As an institution, we are bent on giving the youth of this country the opportunity to better their lives by playing golf. We have just started with Mohammed Muazu, who is currently studying and playing at the Golf Academy of America.”
Muazu was discovered at Ikoyi Club in 2005, where he was nursing the dream of becoming a professional golfer. So far, he has participated in numerous tourneys on the amateur circuit in Africa and America, where he has been impressive.
“For the first time in Orlando, we have a student from Nigeria. Muazo is from the city of Lagos, and has a very interesting story to tell about his indoctrination into the game of golf,” says Brad Turner, campus director at GAA Orlando. “The diversity of the student population makes the Orlando campus a unique place to further an education. Since I started with the Academy in August 1991, I have had the privilege to work with so many international students who bring their distinctive culture to the campus and make the student experience very special.”
