Alexandria, VA – October 1, 2010 – The National Alliance for Accessible Golf (Alliance) announced today the launch of the online GAINTM Silent Auction. Benefiting local GAINTM sites and the Alliance’s grant program, the auction will offer a wide array of golf, travel and other items for bidding. Bidding for this online auction will open from October 1 through October 25 and will be available at www.accessgolf.org.
Auction items include signed memorabilia, golf equipment, and ticket packages to some of the most prestigious championships in golf. All proceeds of this auction will be directed toward partnership opportunities for agencies, organizations and communities to both broaden the reach of accessible golf and to provide assistance and support for agencies and communities interested in creating such a partnership. GAIN (Golf: Accessible and Inclusive Networks) couples community programs and resources to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to become involved in the game of golf – through learning golf skills and by involving the participants in the life skills and social aspects of the game as well.
In 2009, more than 300 people including individuals with disabilities, mentors, volunteers and instructors participated in a GAIN program in their local community. Through support and grants from the Alliance, five sites were funded in the following locations throughout the country including Accessible Golf of Wilmington in Wilmington, NC; the Children’s Course, Home of The First Tee, in Gladstone, OR; the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation in Salt Lake County, UT; the Ability Center of Greater Toledo in partnership with The First Tee of Lake Erie in Toledo, OH; and the University of Southern Mississippi Access Recreation Camp. The impact of participating in GAIN is significant for the individuals as well as the volunteers involved.
