Newton, MA – October 14, 2010 – The PGA of America announced today that Southworth Development will become the title sponsor of the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and the 41 Section Championships conducted nationwide beginning in 2011 and running through 2013.
“The PGA of America is excited to partner with Southworth Development as it sponsors one of our most popular member events, the Senior PGA Professional National Championship,” said PGA of America President Jim Remy. “Southworth’s expertise in the golf industry will bring added prestige to this national championship that has both extended and elevated the careers of many PGA Professionals.”
Southworth Development has been working with The PGA of America for several years on the development of PGA Village Cat Island in The Bahamas, scheduled for completion in 2012. Recently Southworth and The PGA of America have expanded their partnership to develop PGA Villages in select marketplaces within the United States.
The PGA of America has not yet determined the venue for the 2011 Senior PGA Professional National Championship. The Senior PGA Professional National Championship began in December 1989 with a 144-player field at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Since its debut, the participants have included several players who have gone on to outstanding Tour careers, including Jim Albus (a runner-up in 1990) and past Senior PGA Champion Tom Wargo (runner-up in 1992).
PGA members who are at least 50 years of age may attempt to qualify for the national Championship through one of the 41 geographical Sections of The PGA of America. Since 2001, the national championship has featured 264 players competing on two courses, with the low 35 finishers qualifying for the Senior PGA Championship the following year.
On Sunday (Oct. 10), PGA Professional Robert Thompson captured the 2010 Senior PGA Professional National Championship that was contested over two courses in southern California.
“Southworth Development is excited to align ourselves with the Senior PGA Professional National Championship at both the Sectional and National Championship levels,” said David Southworth, President and CEO of Southworth Development. “We are committed to supporting the game of golf and look forward to our growing relationship with The PGA of America and PGA Professionals.”
